P3R Announces 2016 Pittsburgh Triathlon & Adventure Race Age Group Winners

More than 700 athletes from 20 states competed in the two-day event

PITTSBURGH – P3R announced the 2016 Pittsburgh Triathlon & Adventure Race presented by First National Bank age group, Athena and Clydesdale winners. More than 700 participants from more than 20 states competed in the August 13-14 event, which featured the Olympic-distance, Sprint-distance and Adventure Races.

Local athletes Alex Drozd, 23, from Bethel Park, Pa., and Heather Melzer, 47, from Mars, Pa., won overall at the Olympic-distance event, finishing in 1:40:38 and 1:59:32, respectively. Melzer returned on Sunday to win the Sprint-distance event in 1:59:32, and David Wirth, 28, from Pittsburgh, won the Sprint-distance in 49:17 after finishing second in Sunday’s Olympic-distance event.

In the Adventure Race, Stan Strzempek, 43, from Allison Park, Pa., took home first with a finishing time of 57:40, and Valerie Christoff, 46, from Ligonier, Pa., was the first woman with a time of 1:02:01.

“With the swim portion cancelled, athletes were able to push themselves harder on the bike and run portion this year,” said Dennis DiRaimondo, race director of the Pittsburgh Triathlon & Adventure Race. “We had a competitive field this year and saw great age group finishes. Congratulations to the all the age group, Athena and Clydesdale winners.”
